MORE than 1/2 of the operating mines inside the united states will be suspended, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) stated on Wednesday because the mining audit found out important environmental violations and social improvement lapses.
DENR Undersecretary Leo Jasareno said that 12 extra mines, ordinarily nickel operations in Mindanao, were endorsed for suspension.
Jasareno, who’s in price of the mine audit, introduced that 18 corporations are also concern for similarly evaluation.
“We count on to finish the audit past due Wednesday (nowadays). The secretary [Regina Paz Lopez] will make the final choice, as a way to be announced on Monday,” Jasareno instructed newshounds.
Jasareno, who’s the former director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, stated that the 12 mines had been facing suspension because of inadequate social improvement efforts, insufficient mining practices, technical violations, and shortage of proper siltation prevention centers.
To date, about 10 mines — 8 of them nickel producers – have been suspended for environmental lapses for the reason that DENR launched the audit on July 8.
